Academic Advising AT Georgia College

The Academic Advising Center (AAC) is here to help all undergraduate Georgia College students, from the first year through graduation, in planning their class schedules and courses of study. At Georgia College, students are required to meet with an academic advisor each semester to review their academic progress and to plan for upcoming semesters.

The professional staff of the AAC also teach first-year seminars for incoming students. In cases where first-year seminars are taught by academic faculty, academic advisors partner with the instructor to provide essential information for new students on transitioning to college and being successful. The AAC is also responsible for POUNCE and INTRO, the early registration programs for all incoming students.

Academic Advising Services

The best way to meet with an academic advisor is to schedule an appointment online, using the “Schedule an Academic Advising Appointment” link in Unify or following the link directly to the AAC’s Bookings website. For help scheduling an appointment, email advising@gcsu.edu or call 478-445-2361. For instructions for how to schedule an appointment, see our How to Schedule an Appointment video.

Individual advisors also offer walk-in hours each week — contact your advisor for more information. For urgent concerns during Add/Drop Week and Registration Week, advisors are available on call to assist students without an appointment. Please note that during these times, advisors will not meet walk-in students for schedule planning or to release a registration hold; an appointment will still be required for these services.

The Academic Advising Center is located on the second floor of Lanier Hall.

Meeting with your advisor

We recommend you complete the Pre-Registration Advising Worksheet to prepare for pre-registration appointments.

Email or call your advisor if you have specific problems or questions. You can expect a response to emails and phone calls within two business days.

When in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact your advisor with any questions related to your academic progress.

Appointment changes and cancellation

If you can’t make your appointment, you can easily reschedule or cancel. Just open the confirmation email you received when you booked the appointment and click Reschedule. (Alternatively, find it on your Outlook calendar, open the meeting, and click Manage Booking.) On the page that opens, click either Reschedule or Cancel booking. Don’t forget to confirm your choices.

Another option is to email or call your advisor with your cancellation request, and then reschedule using the Bookings website if needed.

If possible, we request that you cancel appointments at least 24 hours in advance, so that other students may use your time slot.

Policy Requiring Mandatory Advising Meeting for Students

Students are assigned an academic advisor through the Advising Center before they start their first semester at Georgia College. Advising meetings between students and advisors are mandatory for first-year students and new transfer students. Students are expected to meet with their advisors prior to each semester’s registration, and meetings with advisors to review degree progress are required for all students after 30, 60, and 90 credit hours earned.

To ensure that students attend these meetings, registration holds will be placed on students’ accounts each semester. Students who have not completed this requirement will not be able to register for the following semester’s classes until they discuss their plans with their advisors and the hold is lifted.

POUNCE Registration

POUNCE is our registration process for all newly admitted freshmen. Using preferences you indicate on your POUNCE form, an advisor will register you for classes based on those preferences, your chosen major, and course availability.
